Lily was a leader in the struggle at the University of Minnesota to keep the General College open. The General College admitted students who faced disadvantages in the K-12 system such as working class, urban students, students with English as a non-native language, and students of oppressed racial backgrounds. She organized an education campaign in Twin Cities urban high schools in support of the General College culminating in two days of action by 300 high school students to protest the closure.
Lily has also been involved in the Immigrant Rights Movement and helped organize for the mass demonstrations in April 2006. From August 2007 to July 2008 she studied in Merida, Venezuela. Since returning in the summer she worked with the AFSCME Strike at the University of Minnesota in September 2007. In February she will begin working with the Immigrant Freedom Network to coordinate a mass action of high school students at the Capital in support of Immigrant Rights and the Dream Act.
