As progressives, we find ourselves at an exciting tipping point. We saw an unprecedented demonstration of power in the 2008 elections, shifting the landscape in Washington and throughout the country. We also face historic policy challenges as we look towards an uncertain future. These conditions make 2009 a critical year for movement buildilng - it's time to convert the power we built in the elctions into a strong progressive agenda and a sustainable infrastructure. We need to integrate the key ingredients of elections, public policy, and base-building into a long-term movement for change.
Strong, effective nonprofit organizations will play a key role in moving this process of movement building forward. To help organizations build this capacity, Wellstone Action is launching the new Movement Building Project - a program aimed at empowering change-oriented nonprofits with the skills they need to move a progressive issue agenda and integrate their policy work with electoral engagement and grassroots base-building on an ongoing basis.
